While I enjoy DIY projects, there are times when I need to call in a professional for urgent client cases. This time, I asked my regular plumber to handle a simple pipe replacement, and he charged me RM 50 for the entire job, including the new pipe. Yes, that's the cost just for him to come over and take care of a straightforward task—no more, no less.
I consider the price quite reasonable. Some may charge less, but most of those are foreign workers who tend to work like mercenaries—showing up for a short while and then disappearing. They’re better suited for one-off jobs like house painting or grass cutting, but for more reliable work, I prefer someone who will stand behind their service.
I still remember an incident at a mechanic’s workshop years ago, where a customer was complaining about high charges. The mechanic calmly asked, “Do you ask the doctor why their bills are so expensive?” The customer didn’t have much to say after that. Another phrase I’ve heard from plumbers is, “You’re paying for my experience, not just my work.” The idea is that a cheaper plumber might not complete the job as quickly or as properly, which can lead to bigger issues down the line.
These days, costs aren’t what they used to be, and that’s why it’s important to focus not only on saving but also on growing your income and investing for the future.
