Bank Credit Card SMS Notification Phone Scam πŸ“žπŸ’Έ

Finally I've received an SMS credit card notification scam after hearing so much about it.

The modus operandi of the scam is as follows :
  1. A 011 phone number will SMS a credit card lookalike SMS notification.
  2. The SMS message asks to call another number 03xx on some credit card transaction.
  3. The credit card number 7800 is a non existing account.
  4. Name drop the big 3 banks (eg Maybank, Public Bank, CIMB)
In theory, most sound minded people would be sharp enough to ignore the SMS notification because they don't have a credit card ending with 7800. However there will be certain naΓ―ve individuals who will panic and try to call back the 03xx number which will direct them to the scam call center.

The 011 mobile number is the most commonly used disposable mobile phone number. In theory, you need a photocopy IC to register a number but most of the time fake id credentials are given and checking is quite lax on 011 number, mostly from XOX mobile operator.

Calling the 03xx number also connects to a voice robot which sounds exactly like the Bank's one (eg press 1 for english, press 2 for bahasa...).

The numbers on the Public Bank hotline also do not match the 03-40652862 number.

The scam sometimes will appear like it's from Maybank also.
