In recent times, a concerning surge has been observed in cases of scammers impersonating TNB (Tenaga Nasional Berhad) personnel. A new tactic being employed involves impersonating TNB personnel and calling up to individuals, falsely asserting that their electricity supply will be severed within a two-hour timeframe. The call 1st comes in as an automated robot call and then entices the victim to press "7" to speak to a customer representative to clarify the issue. The scammers (fake customer representative) then will ask victim for their address and voila the scammers will inform the victim that they are owing around RM1,000 to RM2,000 to TNB in electric bills. The scammers will then be offering discounted electricity bills if victims make payments through certain bank accounts to avoid a power supply cut. Sometimes the scammers will just hang up before even talking as they seem to be specifically targeting senior citizens and mentally weak people.
TNB is well aware of this scam and has placed a warning on TNB's official website the alert the public on this scam. This scam also can be in the form of impersonating Telekom Malaysia personnel also.
