Scammers have adopted a deceptive strategy, masquerading as Byte Dance, the company behind short video format video sharing app TikTok aka 抖音, to exploit unsuspecting individuals. Their modus operandi involves impersonating Byte Dance recruitment managers/talent acquisition personnel and luring victims with enticing part-time job offers, which entail promoting and watching TikTok stars video and promising substantial daily earnings of up to USD 200. The scammers will usually throw in charming nice words like work from home, earn US dollars, work 3-4 hours a day, just need a handphone, exclusive invite only, flexible hours to increase the attractiveness of the job.
Once the victim accepts the job the victim will be added into a chat group where all the other members are the scammers accomplice pretending to be the coworkers of the job. Slowly the scam starts and eventually victim is convinced to put in money to get more money based on the activities given by the scammer to do.
Furthermore, this scheme also exhibits versatility, as scammers have also claimed affiliations with SEA, the company responsible for Shopee, or Alphabet, the entity behind YouTube, making it imperative to exercise caution and remain vigilant in the face of these fraudulent activities.
