MyPB Public Bank's new Mobile Banking Application
Public Bank, founded in 1966 by Tan Sri Dato' Sri Dr. Teh Hong Piow, stands as a prominent financial institution in Malaysia. With a relentless commitment to customer satisfaction and community development, the bank has emerged as a catalyst for economic growth, empowering both individuals and businesses through easily accessible banking services and strategic initiatives.
Public Bank's latest innovation, the MyPB app, boasts a modern and minimalist user interface reminiscent of the TouchNGo e-wallet, very similair interface to modern superapps. It prominently displays account balances at the top of the screen, offering quick access buttons for QR payments, fund transfers, bill payments, and account top-ups. The middle of the interface features banner ads, while the lower section offers mini widgets for various functions like Cash Advance, Pay Loan, Wealth management, Loan Scheduler, Pay Card, and PB SecureSign, loyalty card. Details of your total assets (savings and current accounts) and liabilities (loans) can be seen via the Wealth button.
One of the most groundbreaking aspects of the MyPB app is its eKYC account onboarding, which simplifies the account opening process, eliminating the necessity for in-person visits to the bank.
A standout feature on MyPB app is its integration with the Alibaba Alipay+ network. This connectivity extends not only to China but also to over 200 other countries for cross border payments, making it an invaluable tool for sourcing agents, as well as inbound and outbound travelers. This means for merchants that accepts Alipay, MyPB users can scan the Alipay QRcode and make payment using the MyPB app.
As for foreign remittance, I don't see any option to do that yet but it is believed this is an upcoming feature considering that Maybank can transfer from MAE (Maybank Anywhere Everywhere) to Cambodia's Bakong user wallets. To add, Public Bank has got a big presence in Cambodia so I would not be surprised if this features was added later on.
Users will also find the in-app expense tracker a valuable addition, allowing them to conveniently monitor their daily expenditures. Additionally, the app facilitates QR payments through PB QRPay, streamlining financial transactions.
Do note that after signing up to MyPB and upon activation of the Public Bank Secure Sign feature, there is a 12 hour "cooling off" period before the Secure Sign feature on MyPB app can be used. Therefore do not sign up yet if you are expecting to use the app within the 12 hours to do banking transactions.
It's worth noting that the MyPB app differs from its predecessor, PBEngage, by allowing device binding to a single device, as opposed to three. This means that the app can only be used on one device at a time. Furthermore, users who opt to sign up with the MyPB app will be un-enrolled from PBEngage, indicating a potential long-term transition of all users to the new application. This is one of the improved security features of the MyPB app. Not sure if it's a designed that way but I managed to take screenshots from the MyPB app.
Performance wise the MyPB app is much smoother and faster (responsive) compared to Public Bank's existing mobile banking app PBEngage app, one of the things that users have been complaining about.
Currently, I believe the MyPB app is in its soft launch phase, suggesting that more enhancements and features may be on the horizon. Other banks, such as Maybank with MAE, Affin with A1addin, and Bank Islam with BEU, Rize with Al-Rajhi, have also embraced modern app development, further reshaping the banking landscape. The MyPB is a long awaited app as digital banks are also coming onboard (eg GXBank, Rize).
