Scam Alert: Online Investment Fraud Tricks Doctor into Losing RM468,000 from EPF Savings

A 55 year old woman doctor fell victim to an online investment scam, losing RM468,000 after responding to a Facebook advertisement in May.

She was later approached by an individual claiming to be a representative of Nikko Asset Management, allegedly based in Singapore. The scammer promised returns of 80 to 128 per cent within a month. Convinced by the offer, the victim transferred funds 14 times into four separate accounts between June 17 and August 6, using her Employees Provident Fund savings.

The scammer then sent falsified profit statements through pictures, showing her investment had supposedly grown to RM800,000, including the initial capital.

When asked to pay an additional RM152,725 for supposed tax purposes before withdrawing the profits, the victim grew suspicious and refused. Authorities later confirmed that the company name had been misused by the scammers.

Even highly educated and experienced professionals, such as doctors, are not immune to falling for sophisticated online scams, showing that anyone can be deceived regardless of their knowledge or background.
