Beam eScooter sharing in Kuala Lumpur |
Summary, use the referral code to get RM5 in Beam credits.
After the bike sharing craze has died down, now comes the eScooter sharing craze. These vehicle sharing systems want to solve the transportation last mile problem, an area where it can be inefficient to call a Grab taxi. This service is also suitable for Malaysia as unlike Jakarta (Indonesia) and Hanoi (Vietnam) which uses motorbike taxis (via Grab, Gojek) to solve the last mile problem; Malaysia transport ministry still does not approve motorcycles as taxis.
Costs
It costs RM1.50 to unlock the Beam scooter and it's RM0.45 per min of usage.
Tips
The electronics of the scooter will only kick in when the scooter is in motion, this means you have propel (push) the scooter 1st and let it move then only hit the move button (right handle) for the electronic motor to kick in.
Downtown Kuala Lumpur drivers drive like they are in Fast and Furious movie, so make sure to use the scooter on pavements and pedestrian walkways, avoid using it on the main road.
If you want to ensure you have your Beam scooter around after a quick run, do not lock the scooter. If the scooter is not locked, while you are still being charge RM0.45 per min, other people cannot hijack it, ensuring that after your quick grocery run you can use back the scooter. Locking and unlocking a scooter costs RM1.50, so just balance out the pros and cons.

Beam also isn't the only eScooter sharing app in Malaysia anymore, there's Neuron Mobility which is only based in Cyberjaya and some smaller companies doing solely in universities (eg Uniten's Unicycle).

๐ดUpdates 20220201
Finally, after writing many email to the Beam team, Beam rides is now in Cyberjaya !! These purpled colored escooters are almost impossible to be missed in Cyberjaya. The escooters are placed strategically along all the major artery roads on Cyberjaya. I've seen some in front of Maybank Shaftsbury, in front of Mirage by the Lake Condominium and at bus stops.
