MrDIY sold WD-40 3-in-1 AirCond Cleaner Tested

One day I spotted this air conditioning cleaning solution sold in MrDIY outlet, costing only RM20. Read through the label and found the instructions were pretty simple to follow so decided to buy it and test it out at 1 of the rental premises which my tenant left. This can contains cleaning solution which can be used to clean the vents in the air conditioner.

Basically how it works is you still need to take out the filter net to wash while the cleaning solution is to be sprayed into the fins of the air conditioning unit. What happens next is the cleaning solution will dissolve the dirt and grime stuck on the fins/grille and the theory is that the dirt will be wash down together by the water condensation generated out to the air conditioner outlet pipe.

In a nutshell, the cleaning instructions are
1. Open the aircond head case
2. Take out the filter netting and wash out all the dirt and dust, the dry out the net
3. Spray the air conditioning solution from left to right into the air conditioning fins.
4. Once the filter netting is dried, put it back into the air conditioning unit
5. Turn on the air conditioning unit for at least 15 mins to drain out the dirt

Note:  For extra safety, turn off the main (electricity outlet) before use.

Take out the Filter netting, look how crazy dirty it is on the left
Slowly take it out

Wash the filter netting

Spray the cleaning solution on the fins/grille from left to right

Wait for at least 15 mins for the cleaning solution to penetrate deep into the fins/grille

Put back the clean filter netting

Look how clean it is now

A typical aircond cleaning job by a professional costs around RM150 at least and can go up until RM300. Some air conditioning guys also don’t want to come to service the air cond if only a single unit is involved. While some air conditioning repair guys just come with a brush in hand and just brush off the dirt in the air conditioner without doing any chemical solution wash.

In my opinion, this solution does work and is a quick workaround if you can’t get the air conditioning guys to come over. The cleaning solution should be able to clean the air conditioning unit but it probably cannot clean deep, that is why air conditioning unit guy’s services are still required.

Note that while cleaning do wear a mask as the solution emits very strong odour probably due to the strong chemicals inside.

I just noticed MrDIY do not sell this air conditioner cleaning solution anymore. However, there is another branch sold at their stores.
