Petronas the Malaysian oil giant is officially going in big into the EV charging space through their new subsidiary called Gentari (pronounced like “Jen Tari”). The name comes from the play of words “Generate” and “Lestari” which means sustainable in Bahasa Malaysia. Gentari’s business not just about EV charging but also is involved in hydrogen power and solar power wind energy research works.
Gentari’s EV chargers can be activated using Petronas Dagangan’s Setel app. The Setel app is primarily used to activate Petronas petrol station pumps from mobile. As there's currently already 4 million users using Setel app so it’s a natural transition to connect Gentari EV chargers to Setel app. In the Setel app, the Gentari charger locations can be seen as Gentari's purple dot logo.
Gentari currently has uses 2 models of pricing, charge by time and charge by Kilowatt usage. The charge by time model is suitable for usage of high capacity chargers to prevent people from hogging the charger while the charge by Kilowatt usage is suitable for lower capacity chargers (eg carpark chargers).
Gentari plans to have an ambitious 25,000 EV chargers by 2030.
As EV charger network is still in infancy, there's this website called PlugShare which tracks EV charger locations (included Gentari).
